The Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, has provided starter packs to eight non-custodial offenders to support their economic reintegration into society.
The beneficiaries, who were trained in various vocational skills including welding and fabrication, tailoring and fashion design, farming, hairdressing, carpentry, and printing and graphic design, received equipment to enable them to establish businesses and become self-reliant.
The presentation, held in Abuja on Thursday, September 17, 2026, brought together stakeholders from the justice and correctional sectors.
The Chairman of the FCT Parole Board Committee, retired Justice A.M.A. Sadeeq, urged the beneficiaries to put the equipment to productive use.
Sadeeq, a former President of the FCT Customary Court of Appeal, also pledged his commitment to ensuring smooth and speedy approval processes for parolees.
The FCT Controller of Corrections, Christopher Peter Jen, said the NCoS had previously provided starter packs to ex-offenders who completed vocational training.
He described the latest intervention for non-custodial offenders as the completion of the rehabilitation cycle and urged the beneficiaries to remain law-abiding and use the equipment responsibly.
The President of PRAWA, Associate Professor Uju Agomoh, charged the beneficiaries to maintain high standards in their various trades.
Agomoh urged them to produce quality goods and services that could be confidently displayed at exhibitions and other public platforms.
Also speaking, the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) representative, Joshua Dada, encouraged the beneficiaries to cooperate with the correctional process, assuring them that good conduct could attract further support.
Representing the Deputy Controller General in charge of Non-Custodial Service, ACG Ibrahim Idris, CSC Godwin Lot said the initiative demonstrated the commitment of the Non-Custodial Service to rehabilitation, reintegration and empowerment.
He said the starter packs were not merely material support but an investment in the beneficiaries’ capacity to become self-reliant, productive and responsible members of society.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening rehabilitation, reducing reoffending and facilitating the successful reintegration of non-custodial offenders into society, in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, which provides for greater emphasis on non-custodial measures.
