The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared three senatorial seats in the 10th Senate vacant following the death of the lawmakers representing the affected districts.
Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, describing the deaths as a painful loss to both the National Assembly and the nation.
The affected seats are those for Enugu North Senatorial District, Nasarawa North Senatorial District and Rivers South East Senatorial District.
He said the vacancies make it necessary for the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct midterm elections in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
According to the Senate President, INEC is expected to organise by-elections within about 30 days of the declaration in order to restore representation to the affected constituencies.
Akpabio also paid tribute to the deceased senators, praying for the repose of their souls.
The declaration officially begins the process for fresh elections in the three districts, with political parties expected to commence preparations once INEC releases the timetable.
Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned plenary until April 21 for the Easter break.
