Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in a tense final decided in extra time.
After a goalless 90 minutes, Ferran Torres scored the match-winning goal in the 106th minute, calmly finishing from a Nico Williams assist to hand La Roja their second World Cup title.
Both teams created several scoring opportunities during regulation time but were unable to break the deadlock in a closely contested encounter.
Argentina endured a frustrating evening, with Lisandro Martínez, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández and Cristian Romero all booked during the match.
Their hopes suffered a major setback in stoppage time when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the defending champions to play the remainder of the contest with 10 men.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Argentina fought hard in extra time before Torres’ decisive strike separated the sides. Spain successfully defended their slim lead until the final whistle to lift football’s biggest trophy.
The victory also earned Spain the tournament’s $50 million winners’ prize, while Argentina received $33 million as runners-up, ending Spain’s impressive campaign as the new world champions.
