Troops Foil Terror Plot in Zamfara, Katsina, Kill Two Kingpins, Seven Others

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA have thwarted a planned terrorist attack in parts of Zamfara and Katsina states, neutralizing nine insurgents, including two key commanders, during coordinated operations carried out between May 1 and 3, 2026.

The military disclosed that the operations also led to the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, several motorcycles, mobile phones, and cash.

In Katsina State, personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Fudma encountered suspected terrorists during a fighting patrol along the Turare–Yantumaki Road in Dutsinma Local Government Area. A gun battle ensued, resulting in the death of four terrorists. Troops recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines, ammunition, two motorcycles, seven mobile phones, and ₦153,000.

Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, troops at FOB Bagega conducted a series of offensives in Anka Local Government Area between May 2 and 3. The operations led to the killing of seven terrorists, including two identified kingpins, Anaruwa and Gomina. Military sources said Anaruwa was linked to a known terrorist leader, Kachalla Idi Aiki.

The initial encounter on May 2 saw troops engage armed fighters along the Bagega–Anka Road, forcing them to retreat and abandon their motorcycles. However, the attackers later regrouped and launched a counteroffensive on the military base.

Reinforcements, backed by precision airstrikes from the Air Component, repelled the assault. A subsequent clash involving eight terrorists on four motorcycles resulted in the killing of three more fighters. Troops later recovered additional weapons and motorcycles during follow-up operations.

On May 3, soldiers engaged and killed two more terrorists in the same area. However, the military confirmed that one soldier lost his life in the line of duty.

Troops have since reinforced their positions in Bagega and continue to maintain operational dominance in the area to forestall further threats.

The military reiterated its commitment to safeguarding civilians and urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
